Learn What Something Is By Doing What It Is

as

My friend Phil and I meet monthly ish over Zoom. We talk. We share stories. We ask questions. We learn together. We slow down.

In a recent call, Phil was telling me more about Physicians Leadership Academy. They’ve hosted many cohorts now. Lots of success.

He shared with me, “we needed to do it to learn what it really was, to learn what we thought it was, but wasn’t, and to learn what we didn’t think it was, but actually was.”

I relate. For me it is with my Becoming & Belonging Series. Flow Group. Wander School. Pick A Card.

At one level, none of these are new for me. What is new is some of the framing of purpose — to point to the deeper yearnings of Becoming & Belonging.

This week has been a great week. I’ve hosted two Flow Groups, one Wander School (and a second one later today). Thoughtful community. Wonderful people. A place to rest. A moment to go deeper.

In the spirit of learning what it really is, as Phil describes, some initial stuff:

  • Circle is the baseline — that listening brings added depth, sharing, questions. It’s check-in. It’s check-out. It’s taking turns. It’s slowing down. It’s authenticity.
  • Wander School is a Witness School — it’s finding ourselves in other’s stories that has much magic and medicine. The questions of Flow Game and Wander School add nuance and coherence to that witness.
  • We stir each other. And we are stirred. Can’t not when listening. And we find each other in each other’s stories. The personal is the universal. The universal points back to the personal.
  • It’s a good movie, these 60 or 90 minutes chunks found in wonder together. Kindness, consciousness, flow — these all arise through the most simple of means. And they create what is needed to carry to other circumstances.
  • Lots of fun and joy. That’s what it is to be in deliberate connection together. I’ve known all of the people that participated this week. And I’ve loved having them meet each other and begin to express those hungers of staying connected.

Jump in. Dates for March signup are here (or even today’s Wander School).

I intend these B&B offerings at many layers. As a moment of needed community. As a time of inspiration and integration. As a thing to come home to many times. As a place to be gentle. As some hosted simplicity that can’t help but get to the deeper needed stuff of the day.

Gifts of Circle - Question Cardsasd
Gifts of Circle is 30 short essays divided into 4 sections: 1) Circle's Bigger Purpose, 2) Circle's Practice, 3) Circle's First Requirements, and 4) Circle's Possibility for Men. From the Introduction: "Circle is what I turn to in the most comprehensive stories I know -- the stories of human beings trying to be kind and aware together, trying to make a difference in varied causes for which we need to go well together. Circle is also what I turn to in the most immediate needs that live right in front of me and in front of most of us -- sharing dreams and difficulties, exploring conflicts and coherences. Circle is what I turn to. Circle is what turns us to each other."

Question Cards is an accompanying tool to Gifts of Circle. Each card (34) offers a quote from the corresponding chapter in the book, followed by sample questions to grow your Circle hosting skills and to create connection, courage, and compassionate action among groups you host in Circle.

In My Nature
is a collection of 10 poems. From A Note of Beginning: "This collection of poems arises from the many conversations I've been having about nature. Nature as guide. Nature as wild. Nature as organized. I remain a human being that so appreciates a curious nature in people. That so appreciates questions that pick fruit from inner being, that gather insights and intuitions to a basket, and then brings the to table to be enjoyed and shared over the next week."

This set of Note Cards (8 cards + envelopes)  quotes a few favorite passages from poems in In My Nature. I offer them as inspiration. And leave room for you to write personal notes.

Most Mornings is a collection of 37 poems. I loved writing them. From the introduction: "This collection of poems comes from some of my sense-making that so often happens in the morning, nurtured by overnight sleep. The poems sample practices. They sample learnings. They sample insights and discoveries. They sample dilemmas and concerns."
